Amsterdam to Replace Diesel Run Buses with EV’s

Amsterdam will soon become the very first city within the country to own and run a completely gas-free electric bus fleet.

This arrangement was agreed upon by the city council as well as GVB, a city bus company.

The Amsterdam electric vehicle projects will allow for forty buses to be replaced by electric cars within a short time frame of just two years according to reports by the Volksrant. By 2015 the complete fleet of diesel bus will be converted into an electric run fleet instead.

The ferries that operate over the IJ, back and forth between the city centre as well as the Noord will also be running on cleaner and greener energy sources.

Amsterdam’s transport alderman, Abdeluheb Choho, explained to the Volksrant that this project’s aim is to get rid of fossil fuel based traditions and symbolic pilot projects by (in the words of Nike) just doing it and not first trying it out with four or five busses instead.

Though the city may not be the first to experiment and focus more on electricity powered types of transportation, it may be the first to replace an entire fleet of buses. Brabant has also taken steps to introduce battery-powered busses while smaller experiments are being carried out within Maastricht and Utrecht.

Abellio, a bus firm owned 100% by Dutch national railway company NS, have also pledged support ensuring that 300 buses running between the Limburg province will be electric based if they win the concession.

It must also be noted that six buses located on the Schiermonnikoog Island (on the Wadden Sea) are electric as well.
